Exactly. I have only begun doing WebWork+SiteMesh stuff myself now that 
I'm rewriting TSS, but boy does it KICK ASS! I cannot see any other way 
that would be simpler than that.

Depends on what you want in a "portal framework" I guess. Just using 
WebWork+SiteMesh solves a lot of problems right there, along with good 
design patterns of course.

The goal is to OpenSource TheServerSide eventually, so I'm trying to 
build that in a frameworkish way. But it's damn tricky. And a lot of work...
