Dear Open Source developer I am doing a research project on "Fun and Software Development" in which I kindly invite you to participate. You will find the online survey under http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/. The questionnaire consists of 53 questions and you will need about 15 minutes to complete it. With the FASD project (Fun and Software Development) we want to define the motivational significance of fun when software developers decide to engage in Open Source projects. What is special about our research project is that a similar survey is planned with software developers in commercial firms. This procedure allows the immediate comparison between the involved individuals and the conditions of production of these two development models. Thus we hope to obtain substantial new insights to the phenomenon of Open Source Development. With many thanks for your participation, Benno Luthiger PS: The results of the survey will be published under http://www.isu.unizh.ch/fuehrung/blprojects/FASD/. We have set up the mailing list fa...@we... for this study. Please see http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/mailinglist_en.html for registration to this mailing list. _______________________________________________________________________ Benno Luthiger Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich 8092 Zurich Mail: benno.luthiger(at)id.ethz.ch _______________________________________________________________________ |

What problems in particular are you having with these instructions or in what way do you beleive them out of date? I'm sorry you had a difficult time because of some of the old documentation left behind from previous releases. With 0.9.6 we did update the requirements for the servlet api and the jdk level. We will need to get that old documentation cleaned up. Regards, - Avery |

Scott, Yes, I'm still the project maintainer for DevWiki. I took it over last year from the original author because I had a bunch of patches and enhancements that I wanted to contribute to it and Rus didn't have time to work on it. I'd love to have your involvement in the project. I suggest you go and get the code from CVS to start with. Jim's jar is a lot out of date and there are many enhancements in recent versions, including the build process of which you complain. It is hosted on sourceforge at http://webtrans.sf.net. I suggest you also subscribe to the webtrans-devl list. If you would send me your SourceForge ID I'll add you on as a developer of the project. I would also enjoy seeing a time tracking tool. I'm on a small mostly-XP team at my work. We started out using this wiki there a couple of years ago for our internal documentation. That is where my involvement with DevWiki started. I also agree wholeheartedly with creating a plugin architecture for source control. Right now the CVS code simply calls an external program to do the commits, and I'd like to find a pure java solution, because calling out to a command doesn't work well on Win2K. So far Jim Doyle has taken the lead on CVS enhancements. I've already added a bunch of plugin points for other things in the code like linking style, author management, etc. I don't have a lot of visiblitly to how many installations there are out there. However, it does seem to get a respectable number of hits and downloads off of sourceforge and freshmeat. I'm glad to have you on board! -- Avery Regier sco...@ch... wrote: >Hi Avery, > >I've been playing around with the DevWiki product and am enthused about >bringing it around to viability with my project environments. I added a new feature yesterday: the IncludePageTranslator. It is implemented as a widget with the following syntax: [include page=WikiPage <type=wiki>] It includes the contents of the given page within the current page at the current location. I added some code to strip header translators from the included page. In the process, I removed headers from the SavePage's preview of the page being saved. This eliminated some subtle bugs and I think it just looks nicer. Comments on this are welcome. It is easily changed back or made into an option. I also ended up adding another parameter to the WidgetTranslator.handleWidget() method. I needed within my widget the ability to make a content dependency between the current page and the included page. The WidgetTranslator implementation just calls the original method, so it is backwards compatible, but this provides another extension point for widgets that lets them do a bit more. The purpose of this translator is to support table of contents pages where the subheader you want itself to be a page, but you don't want to have to change the subbullets of that subheader in two places. Hi Avery, I made the RPMs for release-0-9-7. The binary RPM is released on SourceForge already. I need to follow it up with the source RPM - I stopped the file transfer on the source RPM in the middle, not realizing I'd have to wait 24 hours to upload it again. Note that I updated 3 files in CVS and re-tagged them release-0-9-7: lib/wiki/devwiki.spec (the RPM spec) lib/wiki/CONFIGURING-CVS (I realized I should bundle the CVS scripts in the RPM, which made the directions a little different) build.xml (so the new LICENSE file is included in the RPM) I upgraded to this RPM on my machine, went through the CONFIGURING-CVS instructions, and tested it out, and it worked fine out of the box. Excellent. I've got a RecentChanges bug to track down, then I'll do a release hopefully on Sunday afternoon. I'll need you to do the rpms as usual. -Avery -----Original Message----- From: Jim Doyle [mailto:jim...@gi...] Sent: Tuesday, August 05, 2003 10:28 PM To: webtrans-devl Subject: RE: [Webtrans-Devl] On to 0.9.7 Avery, I've completed the backwards compatibility business. Jim, Both the author and the content description can be retrieved from WebContent.getProperty(). The FilePersister knows about them by default in that it is already persisting the properties. -Avery Jim Doyle wrote: >Avery, > >If Author and Change Description get into the FilePersister, getting >them into the CVSAsyncFilePersister and CVSBlockingFilePersister won't >be much harder. Avery, If Author and Change Description get into the FilePersister, getting them into the CVSAsyncFilePersister and CVSBlockingFilePersister won't be much harder. If removeContent and writeContent pass along the author and description, it should just involve getting the persisters to hold onto them long enough to hand off to the WikiCVS class. We might want a class to combine the author and description and act as a placeholder for any future change info. I added a new feature tonight: Change Descriptions when a user edits a page, which can then be seen from RecentChanges. These are saved into a property called "changeDescription" when the file is saved. You have to turn on this behaviour in the RecentChanges page with an option "showChangeDescription=true" and edit your EditPage to show a field named "changeDescription". Jim, How hard would it be to use the Auther + Change Description for the checkin comment in the CVS code? -Avery |

Jim, Thank you for working on this. Well, we'll put it out when it is ready, but I'd really like to be able to push out a new release within the next couple of weeks. We could aim for the first week in August. Is that a reasonable amount of time for you to finish up the backwards compatibility? -Avery -----Original Message----- From: Jim Doyle [mailto:jim...@gi...] Sent: Monday, July 21, 2003 11:25 PM To: webtrans-devl Subject: Re: [Webtrans-Devl] On to 0.9.7 Avery, Here's an update: all my changes are on the trunk - there's nothing left on development-for-1-0 that has not been merged. Avery, I believe all I had left to do on the CVS stuff was merging to the trunk and putting in some of the backwards-compatible things (recognizing old tag and class names). As for the merging, there were two issues I wanted to take care of: CVS was stumbling over merging the new files because I had inadvertently added them on the trunk in the first place, then deleted them from there. So I had to make sure I got all the right files in place from the branch and added back to the trunk. The second issue is that I wanted to double-check that there were no changes to CVSFilePersister since I put my files on the branch. I had split the old CVSFilePersister into two new files, and since the related code is now in files with different names, I have to watch for changes in CVSFilePersister needing merging. And yes, the CVS persister classes still use batch files calling the cvs command line. I had not gotten to do a third persister implementation with built-in CVS client. Let me see what I can do with merging this week. Thanks, Jim On Sat, 2003-07-19 at 14:05, Avery Regier wrote: > I'm in the midst of working on v0.9.7. Rus, I'll upload it to CVS as a seperate module, then, and update the license. As a seperate module it will help you maintain it without having to muck around with the wiki source. -Avery Rus Heywood wrote: >Yes, all one license sounds sufficient. Rus, I'm working on making this change. I'm using the Classpath project for reference. This basically means adding LICENSE file that contains the exception, which I've included for reference, and changing the boilerplate for each file to the following: /* * Copyright (C) 1999-2003 Russell Heywood @ devtools.org * All Rights Reserved. * * It is illegal to distribute this file under conditions other than * those expressly permitted in the GNU General Public License. You * should have received a copy of the GPL with the distribution * containing this source file. * * Linking this library statically or dynamically with other modules is * making a combined work based on this library. Thus, the terms and * conditions of the GNU General Public License cover the whole * combination. * * As a special exception, the copyright holders of this library give you * permission to link this library with independent modules to produce an * executable, regardless of the license terms of these independent * modules, and to copy and distribute the resulting executable under * terms of your choice, provided that you also meet, for each linked * independent module, the terms and conditions of the license of that * module. An independent module is a module which is not derived from * or based on this library. If you modify this library, you may extend * this exception to your version of the library, but you are not * obligated to do so. If you do not wish to do so, delete this * exception statement from your version. */ The only file that doesn't have this exact text is the OrderedListTranslator which has an author attribution of Jon Strayer, and did not already have the copyright by Rus header. I put the license text on this file without the copyright. I've decided to put the copyright by Rus header on all of my new files to simplify licensing decisions down the road in case I ever can't be contacted. Question: would these licensing terms suffice for your utils package? Since the linking exception will allow you to integrate it with whatever proprietary code you want, I think it would be best to have all of it under one license. Let me know what you think. Thanks, Avery Rus Heywood wrote: >>If you use this you'll have a license for which there isn't any question >>about what it means with respect to linking in Java. Thanks, these are committed. Rus, You've mentioned previously that you want to change the license to LGPL, which you had originally intended. There has been a large hubbub recently about the application of LGPL to Java code. I suggest that you can get the same benefit that you desire from the LGPL with the GPL and an extra clause that is used by the GNU Classpath project: |As a special exception, the copyright holders of this library give you permission to link this library with independent modules to produce an executable, regardless of the license terms of these independent modules, and to copy and distribute the resulting executable under terms of your choice, provided that you also meet, for each linked independent module, the terms and conditions of the license of that module. An independent module is a module which is not derived from or based on this library. If you modify this library, you may extend this exception to your version of the library, but you are not obligated to do so. If you do not wish to do so, delete this exception statement from your version.| If you use this you'll have a license for which there isn't any question about what it means with respect to linking in Java. The language has been approved by RMS and the subject of intense scrutiny on the Classpath project. (http://www.classpath.org) Would you like me to switch the license to this or still switch it to the LGPL? Thanks, Avery Rus Heywood wrote: >On Sat, 19 Jul 2003, Avery Regier wrote: > > > >>I got burned today by the MultiProperties which uses ':' for appending >>mulit-properties together. I added a new translator today: the InterWikiLinkTranslator. Now you can set up your sites to link easily to pages on other wikis with syntax such as C2:InterWiki which will take you to the IterWiki page on the Portland Pattern Repository wiki site. I got burned today by the MultiProperties which uses ':' for appending mulit-properties together. I tried to use this with URL's and it didn't work too well. -Avery Regier |

I'm in the midst of working on v0.9.7. I was on vacation for a couple of weeks and I took the opportunity to fix a whole host of Translator conficts. You can see what I've been up to at http://www.devtools.org/tomcat/wiki/DevWikiReleases. Jim, I'd like to get your CVS updates into this release. Are your changes ready for prime time? Are you using those changes in your own wiki installations? Does it signigicantly change how CVS integration is done? (ie, is it still using batch files calling an underlying client.) (I'm struggling to remember what we've decided in the past on this.) Do you need me to do the merging of this code? Thanks, Avery |

If you could also set up the CookieAuthorManager and replace the /widget/EditPage with the one from the samplesite, then we could start seeing RecentChanges linking to author pages. -Avery Rus Heywood wrote: >Okay, I finally had a rainy weekend to install Avery's version of the code >onto my server. Rus, Thank you! The updated CVS code that Jim is working on is going to be in the next version. I don't think CVS was working on the old site anyways. I've noticed that you don't have the TableTranslator or the OnsiteLinkAcronymTranslator configured. If you could turn those on I'd appreciate it because I'd really like to show off that functionality on the test site. See http://www.devtools.org/tomcat/wiki/TableTest and http://www.devtools.org/tomcat/wiki/Recommended096Config Thanks, Avery Rus Heywood wrote: >Okay, I finally had a rainy weekend to install Avery's version of the code >onto my server.
