Please excuse the cross posting of this question. I need to implement this functionality into some scripts that need to be ready ASAP. The target environment is BbLearn 9.1 SP8 with an Oracle dB running on Linux. I have been asked to create a script that will add some columns to the grade book during our course creation process and another script that will populate or modify the information in the columns during our roster load process. Is anyone doing this? How are you doing it? Good morning, We've been running integrated for some time now and this semester we're running into something for the first time that I can remember. We have some sections that got set up in Banner with incorrect section dates. Of course that information was replicated into CE8. Now the Banner data owners want the dates corrected in Banner. We're told the only way to do that is to unenroll all the students (in Banner, triggered to CE8), make the date changes, re-enroll the students. The theory is that any work up to this point should be kept and reunited with the individual when they are re-enrolled. Have any of you been through this? Do you have a workflow to handle situations like this? Nightmare/horror stories?? Thanks for any insight or commiseration. Hello, We have deployed Learn 9.1.8 to test and are trying to setup roles. We are curious to know what other institutions have done with respect to institution roles, system roles and course roles. Are you using the default roles or have you created new roles? Currently we are on Blackboard Vista 8. In Vista we have used Auditor role (course role) and I do not see anything with similar privileges in Learn 9. If anyone has used auditor role before, how are you doing this in Learn 9? We have seen this odd occurrence once ourselves. If the student arrives at the assignment upload page at 7:59 all is well. If they don't attach and submit the file till 8:00:01 then it goes into the system, but has missed the cutoff and is marked so. Another users arriving at the assignment at 8:00:01 can't get to it, as they have missed it. You could try a test yourself to prove this scenario out but I think that is how it can happen. In our case the student was sure they were in on time and since the file was there, we advised the instructor to count it as it was milliseconds late, and technically they were on the page working to upload it before the cutoff. David Schlater Distance and Extended Education University of Idaho 208 885 2125 -----Original Message----- From: Janel Moore [mailto:jm...@ei...] Subject: [Webct-admins] crosspost -- assignment missed I spent some time talking with an instructor yesterday. She had a student submit an assignment, literally, at the last possible second. There is a copy in the assignment dropbox, but it is marked missed in the listing. I'm trying to help verify why/how this scenario could have happened. When I looked at rpt_tracking and the webserver.log files, the file actually was uploaded at 8:00:45.0. Do any of you have any experience/expertise that can help clarify the timing? The system obviously didn't treat it as a "clean" submission, hence the "missed" marker. In other circumstances, the file won't even upload after due date/time. Have we just found a particularly interesting entrance into the Twilight Zone here at our institution? > The assignment is set to cut off at 8:00 AM without allowing late assignments, so she should not have been able to upload it if it was after the time. The "Submitted Date" shows "Missed," but the assignment did get uploaded and shows in the assignment dropbox. My guess is that since it was uploaded at 8:00 AM (or within seconds), it accepted the assignment upload just before the cutoff time changed from 7:59 AM to 8:00 AM. ************************************ Janel Moore Information Technology Services Eastern Illinois University Charleston, IL 61920 (217)581-7625 |

Cross posted: It is finals week here at Purdue and an instructor deleted a gradebook column a couple of hours ago. In the past, we were able to go to the view RPT_EXT_GRADEBOOK, which I believe is refreshed periodically (setting controlled in the server admin gui Reporting Interface). Ours is set to refresh once a month on the 25th. It completed successfully in a little over 18 hours on Apr. 26th. My understanding was that if the column was created before April 25th, RPT_EXT_GRADEBOOK would have the deleted column data till April 25th. But there's no data for the section at all. Furthermore, the most recent date in rpt_extract_log for RPT_EXT_GRADEBOOK is 5/10/2009 while the other views are all current as of this morning. I'm wondering if an upgrade broke some functionality. We're on Vista 8.0.6. Also, other than a full database recovery, is there a way to recover the deleted column? Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Rajini Prabhu Purdue University |

The last time these expired was August 23, 2010. They requested the new certificate in April 2010 for two years, which is why they are expiring soon. As I recall, there had been complaints about that date, so they moved it. We just dislike April as much as August. I'll bet we dislike the new one too. Thanks, Janel info shared by faculty member: > Assignment: Case Study Exam 1 > Due: February 7, 2012 8:00 AM (with no late submissions allowed) > > The assignment is set to cut off at 8:00 AM without allowing late assignments, so she should not have been able to upload it if it was after the time.

Has anyone else had a cluster come down with an attack of the
BEA-000403 error messages?
Last evening one of our clusters had this issue. As I restarted
each node that auto 'shutdown' due to the error, another one would
auto shutdown.
All had the same error text:
weblogic.socket.MaxMessageSizeExceededException: Incoming message
of size: '10000080' bytes exceeds the configured maximum of:
'10000000' bytes for : protocol t3.
The IP of the sender in each case was one of the other servers that
had the same problem!
After some googling it seems that this is a server by server
setting which can be increased to resolve this problem.
So my second question is if you had this issue did you increase
your server's 'Maximum Message Size'?
The default value is 10000000 (also listed as the 'Secure value'),
but it can be increased upto a Maximum value of 2000000000!
I haven't yet looked for a way to just increase the message size
for the t3 protocal. But it does look like I could change the
startup JAVA_OPTIONS using: -Dweblogic.MaxMessageSize=20000000
One final piece of humor is that the limit on the size of messages
is set to keep a single message from allocating more memory then
is available and there by AVOID a DNS attack! The humor of this
escaped me last night.

We just completed our upgrade to SP6 this weekend and we're now starting on the 11g upgrades. The SP6 download files contain an Oracle_11gR2_Templates folder with an installWebCTDatabase.sh script and some .dbt files. Is there any documentation on how these need to be used? UNM is not licensed for Secure Enterprise Search, so we got caught in a long process of trying to get a quote from Oracle. As a result, we weren't even sure as to whether we would have functioning search at the time of the upgrade. We put in a ticket with Bb trying to find out if we could have SES on a separate server since it seemed like Oracle would charge us by processor core, and in response (after being escalated) we were told that it was not a requirement for search after all. Instead we were pointed to the following method for using a few files from the 11g Examples CD, which I seems like it's the replacement for the 10g Companion CD: http://oramrmessin.blogspot.com/2011/04/oracle-11gr2-installing-ctx-knowledge.html Our DBA followed these instructions and we now have functional search indexing without having to pay what was starting to seem like a large sum for SES. From what I was told, instructions tailored specifically to Vista should be making their way into the upgrade documentation for SP6 at some point, but I haven't checked to confirm if that's happened. I think we were looking at the same Oracle SES requirements in the original SP6 for Oracle install doc :) Bb is working on updating that doc, and have provide us with additonal information similar to what they told Jon. So how many are running Oracle 11gR2 with the added items from the Oracle Examples CD? Amy On Thu, 12 Jan 2012, Bruce Ernst wrote: > Jon, > That actually makes sense. Notre Dame is at Oracle 11g on RAC. In fact, DEV and TEST upgrades went so well that we did both SP6 and Oracle 11g in PROD in one outage window.
Now, we have been very fortunate with garbage collection on Oracle 10g - so didn't have to do that as part of our upgrade. Also, our db size is only around 500 gig.
We did the upgrade Dec. 20th.

Oracle released a security patch for JDK 6 recently. Does anyone plan to
install jdk1.6.0_29 as part of their Vista SP6 install, or post install
process?
FYI: It looks like Oracle will be releasing patches for java on a regular
basis similar to what they do for Oracle database CPU patches, but on a 3x
pre year schedule instead (Oracle CPU are released 4x a year).
Oracle Java SE Critical Patch Update Schedule
The next three dates for Oracle Java SE Critical Patch Updates are:
14 February 2012
12 June 2012
16 October 2012

I had to fill out the survey twice to get to the download. It's time to try it on our test cluster. Was the SP6 upgrade as straightforward as any/all of the others have been?

Rajini,
We now have SP6 installed in Development. Our Dev database is hosted on an Oracle 11g RAC environment but pinned to one node and running under 10g binaries. No issues came up with the installer using the Release guide upgrade instructions. I still have no idea what the Oracle Templates are for but will probably be finding out in the next couple of weeks since after I finish validating the service pack upgrade, I will shut down the app and turn the database over to our DBAs for upgrade to 11g.

Subject: RE: New meaning to "General Availability"?
Laura,
We're just getting started with the Vista 8 SP6 install in our sandbox environment with the goal of moving it to production on November 19th. Have you installed it in Production (or any environment) yet? I didn't find anything in the documentation related to the Oracle Templates that have been made available on the download page for SP6. Do you know what needs to be done with the Oracle template file with no extension? Had you already upgraded to 11g before upgrading the application?
Thanks,
Rajini

Subject: [Webct-admins] New meaning to "General Availability"?
Hello Colleagues!
I'm ready to begin thinking about SP6 so I went up to the Behind the Blackboard website...
There is documentation and an Oracle template (what's that? It has no file extension?) for download but no link to an installer...
So
I wrote a ticket (appended is the response from Blackboard) about which I have questions
1. Why is my name misspelled? Lora,? I bet it's spelled correctly as I originally gave it to the system.
2. Why does the documentation call this a "General Availability" release but it is not generally available?
3. During the months of August and up til now in September, has Blackboard increased its confidence in this GA that some of us are experimenting with?
Thanks in advance for any input or conjecture you can offer,
Laura
