contacts to an LDAP server (the marvelous mail client
Thunderbird supports LDAP servers, and so do many other apps).

I'm guessing you mean tying to LDAP for the contacts only?
Using LDAP for the projects etc doesn't make sense.
I'm also guessing you mean using, say, the Outlook Express
address book profile on the LDAP?
Other than that, allowing at least importing of contacts is
an interesting idea. (Never used LDAP, but it doesn't look
too complicated).
