do you you have experience with this approach when I at the same time upgrade the underlying OS (here ubuntu 10.04 LTS to 12.04 LTS) or should I avoid this scenario?

Assuming you want to bring across all global Virtualmin settings as well (like
plans and templates), the commands to use :

virtualmin backup-domains --all-domains --all-virtualmin --all-features --newformat --dest ssh://user:pass@newserver:/backup --onebyone

and then on the new machine, restore with :

virtualmin restore-domains --all-domains --all-features --all-virtualmin --source /backup
