There is probably missing metadata or similar problem.

Any quick fix might be acceptable. E.g turn off the preview pane, or link straight to the PDF document itself rather than the WCQMS "view=publicationpage1"

I've looked at Andrius's TR5 "Alfresco tips and tricks". There's nothing directly relevant. He said "Office documents issue – office documents cannot be previewed in the Web Quick Start website. This is actually not a bug, just the way the WQS website works. When uploading an office document, it is automatically converted to PDF format. Make sure you include only the PDF version to the website collections for display." But we are including the PDFs in the website collections, not office documents. He also pointed us to the rendition documentation http://wiki.alfresco.com/wiki/Rendition_Service
