This problem impacts users that own their own machines
but who do not regularly use Administrative accounts as
a security precaution:
After installing in WindowsXPPro, the setup only allows
an account with Administrator privileges to access the
program. This locks out normal User accounts from
using WASTE.
To reproduce:
0. Start with Windows XP Pro SP1 as a normal "limited"
user account (e.g. not Power User or Administrator).
1. Install and set up the software by right clicking on
the .exe file and choosing "Run As..." so that you can
install the program with an Administrator account.
2. Ensure everything is working (it is).**
3. Close/Exit the program.
4. Click on Start, All Programs
RESULT: WASTE does not appear because the
shortcuts were placed in the Administrators' Start Menu
folder and not in the All Users' Start Menu folder.
WORKAROUND:
0. Log on as an Administrator to perform these
functions. Close/Exit the WASTE program.
1. Cut and Paste WASTE folder from \Documents and
Settings\(admin acct)\Start Menu folder to \Documents
and Settings\All Users\Start Menu.
2. Set Security permissions on \Documents and
Settings\All Users\Start Menu\WASTE to match the
other Start Menu folder items. Be sure to also click
Advanced and reset permissions on child items to match
these.
3. Set Security permissions on \Program Files\WASTE to
match the other Program Files folder items that are
available to Users. Be sure to also click Advanced and
reset permissions on child items to match these.
4. Finally, remove the WASTE shortcut from the
\Documents and Settings\(admin acct)\Start
Menu\Startup folder. You may want to copy it to the
\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Startup
folder; or you might want to just copy it to your own
everyday user account's Startup folder.
5. Log off and log on with your own User account.
**At step 2, the program was launched from Setup and
so it is also running with Administrator rights. This is
not a bug, but it is - perhaps - an undesired behavior.
If you subsequently open a downloaded file from
WASTE, you are probably launching that as an
Administrator as well -- and if the downloaded file is
hazardous, it has access to the system as an
Administrator user. (Fortunately, those of us nervous
Techies who run from User accounts already know some
of these hazards, so the danger is relatively low
compared to the high number of un-patched,
unprotected boxes out there.)
Thanks for a great program! I'm going to enjoy this!

Why? You don't need an admin account to install this program. The installer *should* be set to let everyone install.

By default, "User" accounts cannot install most software,
except in rare circumstances. This keeps the kiddies from
downloading virii onto Daddy's machine ... "look Daddy, I
downloaded a new Screensaver!" :-)
