One possible solution would be to update/install the network-manager package.
Somehow get the debian package into the WANem machine after bootup (via USB flashdrive, external drive etc.) then install it using dpkg -i <package name> command.

After booting up with the WANem CD, I don't get the option to setup interfaces. Tried this on two Machines ( HP and Lenovo) -
INIT: Entering runlevel 3:
Either there are no interfaes ..OR WANem must not be having drivers to detect your NICs.
