Hi Folks I am so very pleased to announce that after fifteen years of development, Wacs has finally reached the 1.0.0 milestone. Both wacs and wacs-php have been released - there are new applications, new features in existing applications and some new types and tags. The installation guide and programming guide have both had significant re-writes. Recently added features include a consolidation of the support for PostgreSQL in addition to Oracle, MySQL and MariaDB. We've also got more features in the Dynamic Search tools; the icon handling has been further improved and there have been several schema changes to support future projects and to remove a few sticking points. I invite you to visit our sourceforge site at http://wacsip.sf.net and our free demonstration site at www.pinkmetallic.com which is now running the 1.0.0 release. Cheers, Beaky July 1st, 2020 |

After a very long delay for which we sincerely apologise we have finally got the re-write of Wacs-PHP for 0.9.2 released. This sees support for Php 7 as well as Php 5, jQuery replaces XAJAX as our dynamic content platform, and it includes both an improved version of modelsel, and a new similar app allowing dynamic selection of sets by a similar means. There are also other small adjustments and improvements to the software. Unfortunately we had to add one additional configuration file attribute to tell our jQuery apps where the system installed version of the library was, and since all our configuration is done in the Perl version which had already been released, we were unable to automate it for this release. The RELEASENOTES tell you how to add this. Please rest assured that this will be all automatic in the next release of Wacs and Wacs-PHP. We hope you enjoy this software and find it useful. Please send us feedback and bug reports. We do like hearing from our user community. Cheers, Beaky September 29th, 2017 |

It's been what seems like an eternity in development, but WACS 0.9.2 is finally released. It's been a long hard slog but finally the Web Administration interface can properly handle Video files. This has always been one of our key plans before finally moving on to a 1.0 release which now looks likely to happen around our tenth anniversary in November of this year (2016). We've also done a lot of cleaning up, bug fixing, documentation updates and improved download performance. About the only thing that hasn't actually changed much is the user interface for users of the system - but hopefully they will appreciate the faster operation, better icons and smoother downloads. The addition of proper support for streaming MP4 video files is also a new feature that should find a lot of favour with our user community. As ever we wanted to get the main Perl version out there as soon as it had finished in the testing phase; the PHP version will follow now that the main release has been completed. So please come and take a look at this new release - it really does take us very much closer to our original design goals for what WACS should be able to do. Cheers, Beaky. |

I'm pleased to announce that WACS version 0.9.1 was finally released on sourceforge yesterday. This new release follows on from the big changes in WACS 0.9.x and really focuses on performance and configuration flexibility issues - apart from one significant new application for editing saved searches, most of the new work is "under-the-hood". On performance, we now have a new structure where you have the choice to cache download files (zips and video files) for faster downloads with much less processing load on your WACS server. At present this requires administrator intervention to prepare the cached file, otherwise it continues to work as before, creating the zip file on demand from the viewing copy of the files. The icon system has been totally re-written with the usedirect system now functional for all sizes of all types of icon, with scaled versions being automatically cached after first use. Once again the normal actions are as they were, and usedirect needs to be enabled for the new functionality to take effect. On configuration, we've totally revamped the way that the various WACS web apps interact with each other. They now look up the URL for every single application they use from the configuration files. This allows for a wide range of new functionality - you can specify a URL with a port number in it (ie :8080) to use non-standard port numbers (this allows you to run a "secret" Wacs on a machine that is also a conventional web server), you can use https:// addresses and you can invoke the Wacs web apps on Web Hosting providers who do not support the concept of cgi-bin directories. For commercial sites this also lets you divide up your main, download and search activities between different web servers if you wish to. To take advantage of the download cache and the like, the iconlink function call in the API has been significantly expanded in capabilities and it has two new siblings thumblink and contentlink which provide similar features with relation to thumbnail images and link to download files. The PHP dialect files for Wacs 0.9.1 will be released in a few weeks time when we've tracked down and solved issues with the XAJAX library used for Web 2.0 active content. If you need PHP support, it might be advisable to wait deployment of WACS 0.9.1 until those are available. Finally I would like to extend our thanks to Brian for his financial contribution to the project - it was most helpful. Enjoy! Cheers, Beaky |

Wacs Release 0.9.0: new features included in this release have been in planning and development for nearly three years now - but it is finally ready. There are many changes but the most fundamental are new abilities to handle relationships between sets and a completely configurable and dynamic attribute system. The first major new feature is that there is now good support for showing the relations between sets: links between videos and photo sets, provisions for multiple resolution versions of the same sets, provisions for multipart videos. The second major feature is that all the attributes used to mark up sets are configurable and dynamic - it's now possible to tailor search features to your specific needs without resorting to code changes. The Wacs demonstration site, www.pinkmetallic.com (CAUTION: Adult Content) is now updated to wacs 0.9.0 and allows you to preview the new features. Enjoy! Cheers, Beaky. |

The new release of Wacs is now out. This release includes a few neat cosmetic changes but the main point is to provide support for Ubuntu up to Natty (11.04) and Fedora 14 & 15 and to pave the way for the upcoming 0.9.0 release. A new database schema update tool (wacsschema) paves the way for this upgrade. Download from http://wacsip.sourceforge.net/ Enjoy! Cheers, Beaky |

If you are seeing "406 Not Acceptable" errors from the last frame of viewing a set, you've probably got this problem..... It appears that the Apache mod_security package is having a bit of an "issue" with the URL with which wacsframe is called, but only for the LAST frame of the set. For now the workaround seems to be to disable the mod_security module in the apache (web server) config file or get your hosting provider to do this. My current guess is that it is the =159=159= (where there are 159 images in the set) bit that makes it think it's an attack - ie an apparently useless assignment. I'm going to look at using a different separator for the URL in wacsframe in the next release of Wacs and see if that improves matters. Cheers Beaky |

Hi Folks I've managed to find and fix the problem with the wacs-php and wacs-php-skins-simple packages on Ubuntu 9.10. Revised packages which fix the problems are now available for download - they are: wacs-php_0.8.5-2_all.deb wacs-php-skins-simple_0.8.5-2_all.deb The problems lay entirely within the packaging scripts and it depended on whether it was the wacs-php package that actually created the /usr/local/pear directory or not. If another package had already created that directory, it would work fine; if the wacs-php package did it, it messed up the permissions. A revised version of the tarball has also been uploaded but the only changes are to the debian packaging control files. All other platforms are totally unaffected. Cheers, Beaky |

Just a few quick updates on the Wacs project... * The Wacs-PHP Simple Skin is now complete Started in 2007, our project to build a demonstration web site prototype using Wacs-PHP has now reached a complete and tested state. This will of course be part of the Wacs 0.8.5 release but you can try it out now as it is the new Member's Area on our demonstration site, www.pinkmetallic.com - it is also in the subversion repository if you want to check it out... * FAQ totally updated We've totally re-written the Project FAQ to be (hopefully) a lot more helpful. Please take a look. We're on course for a new release of Wacs (0.8.5) hopefully either at the end of February or early March. This is shaping up to be a pretty big release with a lot of new features. Cheers Beaky |

We've finally built the WACS demonstration web site we've been promising. So you can now finally see WACS live in action on the internet without having to install it. Additionally you can view and download all those photo sets we've been tantalizingly featuring in our documentation. And true to our open source beliefs, the content is all free and released under the Creative Commons Attribution License. Click on over to http://www.pinkmetallic.com and try out WACS for yourself (WARNING: contains adult content!). Cheers Beaky. |

The new version of Wacs, 0.8.4, has been released today. It includes a brand new web-based first time setup tool called wacssetup which finally removes the need to use the command line to get a working Wacs environment. There's a web version of the add association tool, and our first venture into Web 2.0 dynamic content with a model selection tool written in AJAX and PHP, showing just what you can do with the WACS API. Additionally there is a huge long list of bug fixes and small upgrades. We've also launched our demonstration web site, but more about that in a moment. Cheers Beaky. |

I found that one recently and it's now fixed in the Sub-version repository and will be in the 0.8.4 release. However, I think you're right that I should change it so it works with contemporary OSes rather than historic ones. > Once this is done, easy install completes and the system seems loaded, but I > can't for the life of me login. (I have checked the shadow file for > permissions) You are using the 0.8.3 release, right? These instructions aren't applicable to significantly earlier releases. The cornerstone of logging in is a program called pam_auth which should be installed in either /usr/local/bin/pam_auth or /usr/bin/pam_auth. Which it is depends on whether Wacs has been installed as a package by the package manager (/usr/bin) or installed manually (/usr/local/bin). This program (taken from the squid web cache system) uses whatever authentication methods your machine normally uses via PAM (Pluggable Authentication Modules). I've checked it with passwd/shadow, NIS, LDAP and Active Directory. If you get up a terminal window and run: % /usr/local/bin/pam_auth and then type to it your username, a space and then your password, it should reply with "OK". Eg: % /usr/local/bin/pam_auth username password OK <CTRL>-D % If you do something that isn't your password: % /usr/local/bin/pam_auth username fibble ERR <CTRL>-D % If you've discovered that pam_auth isn't there, the source code is in the security sub-directory of the WACS distribution and can be compiled with: gcc -o pam_auth pam_auth.c -lpam -ldl You then need to become root and copy it into /usr/local/bin/pam_auth: cp pam_auth /usr/local/bin And then set the permissions to be setuid root: chown root /usr/local/bin/pam_auth chmod u+s /usr/local/bin/pam_auth The permissions on pam_auth should look like: -rwsrwxr-t 1 root root 12256 2009-11-08 18:08 /usr/local/bin/pam_auth The alternative way to verify that everything is working is to add a permanent permission for one of your client workstations using the access control list. Then a password won't be required for accessing Wacs. You do this by editing /etc/wacs.d/wacs.acl and adding a block something like: <ipv4-192.168.200.13> <user>beaky</user> <type>permanent</type> <date></date> <role>power</role> <prefexcl>F,D</prefexcl> </ipv4-192.168.200.13> There is some discussion of the access control lists and how they work in Chapter 2 - First Steps of the Administration Guide. It's probably not as detailed as it should be, so I'll try and update it. Hope this helps... Cheers, Beaky. |

Hi Beaky, I have managed to get the system installed via both the manual and easy install methods. I tried both because I found what was causing errors and because I couldn't login after the manual method. I got through to the same point in the install with your suggested changes however there are 2 additional issues: In vendors.xml the end tag needs to be changed <vimgpage>http://members.karupspc.com/refstat.php?lid=#SETKEY#&sid=29</v mpage> needs to be changed to <vimgpage>http://members.karupspc.com/refstat.php?lid=#SETKEY#&sid=29</v imgpage> Line 157 For the later versions of cpan easyinstall.pl needs to have install deleted $cpaninstaller="cpan install "; $cpaninstaller="cpan"; Line 30 Once this is done, easy install completes and the system seems loaded, but I can't for the life of me login. (I have checked the shadow file for permissions) Any suggestions. I thought I'd just let you guys know that there's some significant new work just added into the SVN repository related to downloads. The existing Wacs download mechanism is getting a bit long in the tooth but we're not quite ready to tackle a big re-write of that just yet. However the "download experience" has been decaying quite a bit of late with the major sites adding various new techniques like image capture to foil automatic download solutions. Additionally, Firefox have stopped keeping a text-version of the cookies cache available for us to read, which makes things harder too. The thing is that Wacs sits on the fence between being a collection management tool for private individuals and a content management system for adult content providers. We know from a providers point of view what a pain (and expense) it can be if someone really hammers your download servers pulling loads of material they'll never be able to use. At the same time, we also understand how important it is to collectors to check that they have everything which is available by a favourite model, and have an easy way to check up on and download any new material that has been added recently. The new tools we've added, which will be included in Wacs 0.8.4, try to assist in the downloading of new content by working co-operatively with a web browser rather than trying to engage with the remote website directly. You can save a model's main index page and have it parsed direct from the saved version; you can view a download "To Do" list and click on the relevant link in order to do the actual download, and you can have Wacs check up on the files you've ticked as having been just downloaded. We hope these tools will work better with a wider range of sites, help the collectors to build and manage their collections and at the same time respect the content providers concerns about their servers and bandwidth being excessively consumed. Although we've always stayed away from completely automatic downloading, we feel this web browser assistance model of download sits better with our twin objectives of helping both collector and content provider. It also puts users of Wacs even further from accusations of using techniques banned by many sites terms of service. Cheers Beaky. |

Hey Folks WACS release 0.8.0 is now available. With this release WACS goes Beta... We've been polishing like crazy this last four months, and we're very proud of the result - the user experience is massively improved - much speedier browsing, better menus, new search options - just take a look at our new 63-page User Guide book with over 70 illustrations and you'll see just how much we've changed. WACS site managers will find things hugely changed too with XML-based configurable menus, significant enhancements to the collection management tools, and a much more flexible structure. Come on over and take a look! http://wacsip.sourceforge.net/ http://launchpad.net/wacs Enjoy! Cheers, Beaky. |

The matching release of wacs-php to go with the 0.7.4 release of Wacs released on Friday has now been released. The big news for this release is a much more "real world" worked example program called newsets.php to demonstrate how to use the WacsUI module to aid in the rapid development of good looking functional web sites. Other changes include some additional tips on installation methods, a few bug fixes and updates to track upstream changes in Wacs brought in at 0.7.4. Enjoy! Cheers, Beaky. February 25th, 2008. |

Hi Guys I wrote: On Wed, 2007-12-26 at 10:30 +0200, Beaky, The WACS Man wrote: > I'm currently investigating problems with the image set search screen > with the Wacs installation on my laptop (using MySQL) OK, I've found the bug and fixed it. The modified version has been uploaded to the subversion repository at sourceforge. Let me know if anyone wants me to put out a patch release for the distribution version of 0.7.3 to fix this and the wacssetmgr bug. It turned out to be a tag placement issue with the <label></label> directives added by the perl CGI module and how these affected the table layout directives they became intermixed with. The effect was only happening in the later columns of the table layout of the search screen. Enjoy. Cheers, Beaky. |

Massive new release of Wacs-PHP; the PHP5 interface to the Web-based Adult Content Server, WACS. This release includes a COMPLETE implementation of the new Wacs User Interface toolkit, wacsui - the first time the PHP variant has offered the presentation utility functions available in the perl API. In addition to this, several more of the significant configuration query functions from the Core API are now implemented: getvaluename and geticonlist in particular. This release is compatible with Wacs release 0.7.3, released earlier this month. RELEASENOTES: Wacs-PHP release notes ---------------------- NB: 0.7.3 will be the last GPLv2 licensed version; the next will be GPLv3 New Features in Release 0.7.3 ----------------------------- - comment placeholders added for all wacs.pm functions - new implementations of wacs.pm functions in wacs.php - getvaluename - returns the long name for a short value for specified object - geticonlist - returns all the same hashes (as arrays) as the perl version - added extra data structures so geticonlist provides all same answers as perl - new module wacsui.php - the wacs user interface components module created - aims to support same calls as perl equivalent - iconlink function moves there from wacs.php - describeher function now implmented in PHP - new version of whatshedoes (named parameters) now implemented in PHP - addkeyicons and doicon now implemented in PHP - added debug mode support as per perl version - added layout-style attribute to show how filesystem is organised - new tests directory added with a sample data conversion tester and a wacsui module tester. Bugs fixed in 0.7.3 ------------------- - added check for existance of initially requested attribute before attempting an assign to $result of it in conf_get_attr() - removes spurious warning |

I've discovered a bug in wacssetmgr when used with MySQL. The popup menu of locations is not populated and any location guessed by the updateinfo command is overwritten with an empty string. The problem is with the embedded SQL command: select unique( slocation ) The select unique() function is only available in the Oracle dialect of SQL; the correct portable SQL statement for this is: select distinct( slocation ) To fix this simply change the select unique( slocation ) line in the code to select distinct( slocation ) - it only appears in one place in the wacssetmgr code - or download the updated version for the SVN repository. If anyone is uncomfortable with doing this, please just let me know and I'll issue a patched version of 0.7.3 with this fix in place. Cheers. Beaky. |

Just in time for the Christmas Holidays, it gives us great pleasure to announce the biggest and best release of Wacs yet! For those dark and cold winters nights, tidy up that hard drive p**n collection so you can find all your favourite sets and models once again! With this release, just about all of the image set collection management code is web based with a smooth enough workflow that even those of us used to the command line interface have switched over to it! For the first time, we've included a couple of sample model records to give you an idea how they should look. The import/export routines for model details are now joined by matching tools for sets, so data interchange between wacs sites is now easier than ever. But that doesn't even begin to scratch the surface on the changes we've made to Wacs itself. There are numerous little things that we've fixed, improved and added that while not revolutionary, should vastly improve the browsing experience. We've also done some usability testing and taken note of first time users comments; those have been noted and small changes made to make things a little more obvious and easier to use. While the video side of things works great for retrieval and on the command line, the web-based management tools aren't quite there yet and early in the new year there'll be a 0.7.4 release to address those issues. We've also got very exciting plans for a shared meta-data project for the new year - tell us the details of a model on one site and we'll tell you where else her work has been seen. Anyway, Enjoy! Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from all the Wacs developers. Cheers, Beaky. December 14th, 2007. |

No, not a present, although I do have some photo sets I could release under a suitable Creative Commons license if someone can offer hosting facilities. Unfortunately I didn't get the 18 USC 2257 documentation for the first shoot, but did for the second.... so a US-based site could only host the photos from the second shoot, unless they hold documentation for the same model from another source (least I think that's how it works, not rightly sure.) > or URLs to any test sites? Again, no, unfortunately my ISP forbids it and to be honest with an extremely busy 256Kbps uplink ADSL, you really wouldn't want to use it anyway.... > or URLs to any production sites? Not aware of anyone using it in production yet, although we have done some proof of concept stuff which shows it can exactly mimic at least one of the "real" sites out there. There was a guy in Calgary, Canada who was going to make up some sample "skins" using the PHP interface which we could ship out with the php interface package, but he's gone quiet on me so I don't know if those will be forthcoming. If someone else cares to volunteer, I'm happy to provide advice and assistance off-list to get that project up and running. Officially, I'm still calling the application "alpha software" probably through year end. That said the work currently in the SVN repository for 0.7.3 is getting pretty close to where I think it should be for a status change to "beta". The collection management web-based toolset is definitely getting to where I want it to be, at least as regards image sets. The video clip handling is less polished at this time, but definitely on the short-term "To Do" list. Hope this helps. Cheers. Beaky. |

That shouldn't make a difference outside the database and tables sections. Hope this helps.... Cheers. Beaky. |
