The objective of this project is to develop an open source database replication software benchmark and testing tool. It is very difficult in database replication projects to estimate necessary network bandwidth, CPU, memory and disk usage, etc. This project will help compare different database replication softwares and can be used as a capacity plan tool for database replication projects.
The project goal is to do a "Wacky Races" for database replication software, simulating high data volumes, unstable networks, server shutdown, and all sort of simulated disasters to see how each database replication software deal with them.
The project name was inspired on "Wacky Races" cartoon. I believe that it is an appropriate name for what we hope to do... see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wacky_Races
The technical inspiration for the project comes from PolePosition database benchmark tool (http://www.polepos.org) and the difficulty for the companies in database replication projects planning. If we could do a PolePosition similar tool for database replication it will be very nice.
If you develop or like database replication software we invite you to join us !
Why open source ? I believe that maybe this project will be bigger than developing a database replication software, and we can not do it alone, we probably will need help. I believe that with this tool we can reduce the sales cycle helping everybody who sells database replication projects.
