Hi Dan, (this email is cc'ed to waba-developers). > Hi, What is the status of Waba? It looks like there has been little or > no activity for about a year. Unfortunately, I have no more time to work on it. So, you're right: since more than a year nothing has append. > Im looking for a VM that is suitable for use in embedded systems. This is why I was using and helping Waba in the past. I was working for a company doing embedded systems with low resources (slow CPU, low RAM, =2E..). But in the meantime, they have switched to a better system (fast CPU, more RAM, ...), and the decision was to do all in C or Python, and Waba is no more used since more than 1 year. And since the begin of this month, I have moved to another job no more related to embedded systems. (at least at this time). > I have compiled waba for Linux, and run a number of tests on it, and I > like what I see. Im curious what its future looks like.=20 You're right. Wabo for Linux is running great. I think so too. (Yes, I'm the main contributor in the Linux part of Waba, but this is not the only reason. ;-) ) For the future... I don't know. For me, I think I will no more use Waba, as I don't have real interest on it. One thing to do if you want is to make an email on the waba-developers list, and ask who is interested to continue or not. And if someone want to be the Waba@sf admin, I will be happy to give him the admin right. Maybe you can also look at superwaba.org. This is an active waba development, but only for Palm and WinCE devices. Hope this answer you. Good day. Hi all, I'll be looking into getting Waba working with the CLDC + MIDP classes as described by J2ME. The skeletons of the classes already have been added to the CVS server. Note they all should compile, but don't really do much. Later on I'll be looking at CDC and the PBP / PP / Foundation profiles. Note that I'll not state that we are compliant, but we are striving to be ;). Manfred. |

Hi there, I've got a question for you. I've been working on that DOS port (will create a Borland make file shortly so that people with the right set of tools can build it themselves). I've also tried to compile the Win32 version and it seems that it wasn't done with Visual C++. Any hints, suggestions there? I would like to have it working with that compiler as well. it seems that it creates the same problem with 'inline' as the Borland DOS compiler. Note that I want to try to get it compiling for WinCE devices too. Let me know what you think of this. I specifically want to run it on my own PocketPC ;) Ohhh, one last thing: in the base directory of the project a build.xml has been added, when you have Jakarta ANT (http://jakarta.apache.org) installed you can invoke the DOS build from there. Regards, Manfred. |

Hi all, I've finally found some time to work a bit on a DOS-only port of Waba. I had to patch the 'waba.c' and 'waba.h' a bit and of course I needed to implement the platform specific stuff. I've got a question for all you developers, DOS has that quirky restriction with filenames, being 8.3 long. I was thinking of a translation table to translate just before classloading. It does seem to work. Because I don't have committer status I'll be happy to send you guys the diffs and the compiled binary + renamed classes ;). Manfred. |

I know the java compilation with our autoconf/automake is not really easy. I have read an email some time ago talking about the "automake" for Java (don't remember the name now). But this is another question... For your problem, I think you need to play with the javac options. Take a look at the README, part "NOTE ON JAVA COMPILERS". For example, Jikes needs special flags (+CSO) and the set for the classpath. I have one time tested with the newer version of jikes. It needs other flags (+OLDCSO, maybe also other, don't remember). My first suggestion is to try to add the classpath like with jikes. If you find the solution, thanks to update the README with the needed information. Hope this help. Was going to poke the collective brain before I dove into this one. Seems that Sun's JDK 1.4.0 javac doesn't spit out class files that waba can handle. I'm getting 'member not found' exceptions. Rebuilt with JDK 1.3.1 and all is well. Hello everybody, Waba is already quite small and efficient, but I have an idea, which might optimize it further, on a few platforms. As of now, we have a big switch() statement, for the opcode processing. On Linux at least, gcc would convert that to a jump table. But I am not sure of the other platforms and compilers. It could be converted to a big if-elseif-else statement too, which could be very expensive if the switch is as big as ours. If developers of waba, on different platforms, viz, solaris, hp, win*, palm, could testify, if a big switch() is converted to a jmp table or if-elseif-else stmt, then it would be good to decide, if we want to stick to the switch statement or convert it to something else. chyrag. -- Chirag Kantharia, symonds.net/~chyrag/ |

Hello Gregg, > What is the situation with the license for Waba? a little bit "confusing" (this is my opinion). > As near as I can determine, Waba is licensed under > GPL, while some of the variants (SuperWaba?) seem to > be offered under the LGPL. Originally, waba 1.0 was released under GPL license. Then, Sean Luke has received (non-written) permission from Rick Wild and WabaSoft to distribute the Waba for the Newton under the BSD license rather than the GNU GPL. Guilherme C. Hazan has also received a (non-written) permission from Rick = Wild to distribute SuperWaba under the LGPL. I have look at his license.txt file= in the sources. And I'm confuse. Guilherme has add an amendment to the license, mainly saying : << requires the software using or linking to the SuperWaba virtual machine or its libraries to prominently display the following notic= e: "Created with SuperWaba http://www.superwaba.org" >>. I don't want to make = lot of comments on this, but I don't really understand. Will this mean "all the programms using SuperWaba as VM must include this notice" ? If yes, how to = make with programms which follow the Waba standard API and run on many VM ? And = as the _main_ feature of Waba is the multi-platform aspect. I have also look at the begining of the source files, and this seem to me breaking the GPL and = the copyright. The only person who can change a license is the owner of the copyright. And= for the main files of Waba, this is Rick. The original copyright is from him. Again, SuperWaba cause me some troubles. About all the files include now al= so a copyright from Guilherme. I think Guilherme can't do this. The copyright is here for protecting this. He can put the copyright notice with his name onl= y in the new files, not in the old one... Anyway, after some discussions on the waba-spec list, the main reason for t= his "3 licenses style" is Rick don't care about the license. He just want Waba continue and grow. And we want too. Here is the links to the Newton port and SuperWaba : http://cs.gmu.edu/~sean/newton/waba/ http://www.superwaba.com/ > I ask on this list since I'm considering making > changes to the VM; If I make changes to Waba, can > those changes be applied to other variants? I will give my opinion : - if you put your changes in http://waba.sourceforge.net/, this will be definitly under the GPL license. - if you put your changes in the Newton port, this will be under the BSD license. I don't know very well about this license. If someone can just answer my "main" question on it : can we take some part of BSD-licensed sources and put them on GPL-licensed sources ? - if you put your change in the SuperWaba port, this will be under the LGPL. But section 3 of the LGPL say you can use the GPL instead of the LGPL for= a specific copy of the sources. So, all the changes in the SuperWaba version can be taken without problem and inserted in a GPL project . Another question is : can we take a change make under the GPL/LGPL and incl= ude into a BSD-licensed project ? If yes, all is OK to take the changes from the sourceforge port or the SuperWaba port and include in the Newton port. If n= ow, this is a problem, and I don't have an answer now. > I would ask similar questions about other recent > changes, such as the changes for multithreading. OK. As the changes for the multithreading was done on the http://waba.sourceforge.net/ version, this is definitly a change released u= nder the GPL. This is the same for all the things made on http://waba.sourceforge.net/, like the Linux port, the RUPUTER port, the JAR support... I also think the important point for waba is to be and stay Open Source. I hope this email make thinks more clear. Of course, this is my point of vi= ew. If someone want to comment it, don't hesitate. Good day. Olivier --=20 Olivier Bornet SMARTDATA SA Oli...@sm... What is the situation with the license for Waba? As near as I can determine, Waba is licensed under GPL, while some of the variants (SuperWaba?) seem to be offered under the LGPL. I ask on this list since I'm considering making changes to the VM; If I make changes to Waba, can those changes be applied to other variants? I would ask similar questions about other recent changes, such as the changes for multithreading. -- Gregg ===== Thanks, Gregg Fowler NOTE: Please direct responses to gre...@ya... __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? If this is the wrong list for this type of question, please let me know. With the latest work on threads, longs, and doubles, it seems like Waba is getting very close to supporting most of the major java language features (ignoring differences in the associated classpath). Is anyone actively working on Exceptions? Has anyone familiar with waba's architecture written up any notes about how they think exceptions support should be implemented? Time willing, I might be interested in helping, but I wouldn't want to conflict with someone else, or do it in a way that is contrary to what someone with a longer-term view would recommend. -- Gregg Fowler (gre...@ya...) |

This is because the system only look at the time of the files, and don't make a real check. To be sure what will be updated, try to do a diff (like "cvs diff -rHEAD > temp.tmp" and look at the temp.tmp file). If the diff really only show your modifications, it's OK to commit. Event if the list of the file is not correct (it can include a lot more files), when you really send the commit, only the changed files are commited. And all the other "correct but listed" files will be "marked" OK on your CVS copy. Also, it can be necessary to update your CVS working files before making the commit. Please try once more time the commit. If this don't work, let me know and I will make it for you. Good day. Olivier --=20 Olivier Bornet SMARTDATA SA Oli...@sm...
