Justibus, I know you've a new kid and all that, how are things? Since there doesn't seem to be much left for create, what are you currently working on? Component testing?
I had to take some time off some projects recently for a number of reasons, and still am working on my batch files. These things take a while, I wish there was a way to speed the process up.
Anyway, uh, any word from Winterstorm?

I'm slowly developing a semi-automatic xml testing environment. It applies an xml to the Windows 7 setup, installs it to a virtual machine (virtualbox), records any intallation errors (setupact.log) or event log warnings and errors and presents them for analysis. The conceptual work is done in some detail, now I need to start coding. I also need to explore additional ways of testing applications, if they still work with some components removed. On my machine, sandy bridge cpu and ssd hard drive, it takes about 10-15 minutes to go through this whole procedure. I think that's acceptable.
This should speed up xml testing considerably. It'll take a few weeks until I have some presentable testing environment.

That sounds interesting. Is it possible to have live component removal, sort of like what 7C Live was supposed to do? It would make testing and not having to ghost a clean image over and over easier, or in the case of a VM, not having to reinstall over and over.

You mean removing a component directly from a running Windows 7 system? I'm not sure that's possible. I think we'd stumble into a myriad of file and registry permission issues, not to mention files that are locked because they are in use.
And doing testing on a live system is also a rather tedious affair. True, you don't have to do an install for testing, but you'd still have to ghost, if something goes wrong.
I'm halfway done with the test environment. It creates the iso and installs it and extracts the logs when everything goes fine.
I need to do the case, when setup fails, and the analysis of the logs.

So, anything new going on? I think we lost Winterstorm. I'm still working on stuff slowly, but surely.
I've been on vacation for the last 5 weeks and busy with the kids. So I haven't done much. But things should slowly settle down now.
Hi there,
No I'm around. I experienced many troubles launching "remove.exe" on my system (Windows 7 SP1 x64). I only have error massages.
So I'm waiting news from justibus.
Was that the errors you described in this post?
I have to get my hands on a computer without perl to test that.
Sorry I take so long about it.
Can you describe the errors and what you're doing so I can try to replicate the problem?
This is exactly this problem.
Thank you so much to have a look on it.
Why don't you try virtualization software like VMware Player v5.0.0 (Free) that is just be released today.
