    I don't see this as something that will work on all linux distributions :(

    For example, it doesn't work on my ubuntu 8.04

    ariancho@toreng-0557:~$ python2
    bash: python2: command not found

    I believe it will work on ARCH linux, but changing this to support ARCH and break Ubuntu makes no sense. What I would do in your situation is to apply this patch before you create the arch linux package. This patch would only be applied then, and not in the project mainline.
