I just added a test to vil that loads images generated from external
programs (xv). I found that vil fails to correctly read the iris and
bmp formats. Could someone with more expertise with these formats have
a look see?

- "iris" is a 3-plane colour image, not an interleaved RGB.
- "bmp" is an interleaved BGR colour image, not RGB.
Could that have to do with the failing?

Actually, according to some docs I found on the web
the 24bit format stores the data in RGB form, but the colour table, if
it exists, is in BGR form.
I think this may be the cause of the trouble. I'll track it down
sometime, unless someone has in-depth BMP knowledge. I figure not many
people are relying on BMP for image storage...
