We would like to propose the elevation of vil2 to full VXL core status.
Judging by the commits to vil2, several other groups are using it now.
Any support, objections, or comments?
vil2 now has more functionality that vil. File support exists for all major
file types. vil2 has a cleaner design, is faster, has support for more
general memory formats.
The only remaining code change that is absolutely necessary to make vil2 a
true level1 library is to move vil2<->vil1 conversion code into vil1. This
would mean that vil1 would be dependent on vil2, and not vil2 on vil1 as it
vil1 would be moved out of core after a several months further grace.
One option is whether to do the renaming that was discussed at the last VXL
We would rename the existing vil to vil1, and rename vil2 to vil. This would
not involve converting any code automatically from using vil1 to using vil2.
The renaming would be done, by distributing 2 scripts to rename vil and vil2
in anybody's existing private code. Then we would announce a closure of the
repository, download the CVS repository from SourceForge, do the renaming so
as to preserve the histories, and ask SF to reinstall the modified
repository. I estimate that it this would take a few days - mostly due to
delays in getting and reinstalling the CVS repository.
We propose that we do this renaming, sometime after the 12th May, and before
the end of May.
Ian and Tim.
