Extract the VXL source into the directory vxl-1.5.1. Create a separate =
output directory bin parallel to the source directory:=20
.../.../... ---+--- vxl-1.5.1 ---+--- vxl

| +--- vcl
| ...
|
+--- bin
Let us call the former $VXLSRC and the latter $VXLBIN.=20

"former" and "latter" are referring back to the previous sentence in the =
instructions, just above the figure,
so these variables are set like this:
VXLSRC=3D/fully/path/to/wherever/vxl-1.5.1
VXLBIN=3D/fully/path/to/wherever/bin
personally I use
VXLBIN=3D/fully/path/to/wherever/vxl_bld
