Ipset support is not planned, although I agree it would be an interesting addition. One reason not to include it has been that standard distributions didn't support it. Not sure if that is still true.
Support for ipranges is something I'd like to support, but I have no ETA for you. Could be quite a while. Contributions are welcome of course :)
