We use HIP for those functions because it's my understanding that all
request functions must be processed through the HIP application server. For
example, if the HIP server is offline, requests cannot be placed using the
Horizon client because HIP generates the ID number for the request. Rather
than trying to bypass HIP, we chose the easier approach. Fortunately, the
data can be retrieved as XML, so we can easily process the XML rather than
screen scraping. We currently don't run HIP under SSL, but it is possible,
so encryption would be an option.

Thanks your e-mail.
Am I right in thinking you use HIP for those functions because they require
a database change?
Do you perform the database changes at the sql level or does HIP do that for

My Horizon driver connects to the Horizon server for patron login and
item status information. We use port 5000 for Horizon connections. I
use the HIP server for all holds-related functions (place, cancel,
suspend), for renewing items, and the getMyFines function. For HIP
connections, I use http requests with curl. Adding "GetXML" to the
querystring effectively turns the HIP server into an XML web service.
I haven't implemented encryption on any of he connections.
