It was a bit before my time here, so I'm not sure what the exact symptoms were, but I recall hearing that there were some problems with the handling of CSS files that included dynamic PHP-generated content but did not output appropriate HTTP headers. This is the reason why so many of the CSS files packaged with VuFind start with:
Header ("Content-type: text/css");
Is it possible that your CSS files are not giving off the right headers? I'm not sure why this would cause intermittent problems... but it's worth a check!

Subject: [VuFind-Tech] Intermitent CSS Errors
We're currently experiencing intermittent css errors on our site. Has anyone else experienced such problems and resolved them?
