Hello, I am having an intermittent problem on our VuFind installation. This is running on VMware on a virtual Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit server. Sometimes when I do a search, I get a 403 forbidden error. If I refresh a couple of times, it will eventual load. If I was just getting the error every time, or if reloading didn't help, I would think it was some sort of permission error. I can't figure out why it would be intermittent like this. Any Ideas how I can troubleshoot this? Thanks so much, -- Kevin Smith Digital Library Manager Wake County Public Libraries |

hmm, I have set the log to debug. I am tailing the log now, I have gotten the 403 forbidden error, but nothing is showing up in the log. I don't see anywhere else the log could be going. I have noticed that this happens if I continue to refresh a results page, and just before it happens, many of the cover images stop loading.... Hi, Apparently, as long as a patron is logged in, all "Home" URLs (ie http://www.mylib.org/vufind) lead to My Account. Can one change this? If so, how? Ideally, I would like the "Home" breadcrumb to always take one to VuFind home search page - WITHOUT logging the patron out. Those settings look reasonable to me, though in the default configuration, the directory in the <Directory> tag has a trailing slash and is not enclosed in double quotes. I'm not sure if either of these things make a difference, but does it help to use: <Directory /usr/local/wcpl/vufind/web/> instead? That's probably grasping at straws, though - I don't see how ANY configuration issue could lead to intermittent failures. It should either work or not work; this intermediate state is very puzzling. What do the logs look like when you get a successful response? Are there any clues to be had by comparing success vs. failure? If you put up a static HTML page in the default Apache document root and hit it repeatedly, do you run into the same thing, or is it only happening with VuFind? I notice from the logs that mod_deflate is being used to compress responses. Could this be a factor in the problem? Does it help if you disable it? (See http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/mod/mod_deflate.html) Good luck! - Demian From: kevin smith [mailto:as...@gm...] Sent: Friday, December 02, 2011 4:59 PM To: vuf...@li... FYI, I finally figured this out. It was caused by mod_evasive, which I had installed at the request of our county security team. When I disabled the module, the problem went away.
