Hi Guys!!!
Many thanks for these advices, I exported the marc records with items including the location of each item and then I followed the logical steps… reading vufind.org/documentation
I created a new index modifying the marc.properties and the facet.ini
By now I have a new Narrow Search sorting by branch/location

separate branches would show up in the narrow search. Unfortunately this 
is well beyond my ken. Would he have to set up the branches as separate 
shards?

You should be able to solve this through faceting on a single index -- assuming that there is information in your MARC records to identify the branches, it's a matter of configuring your import rules (import/marc_local.properties) to store the information in a facet field (collection, institution or building might be a good choice).  Then you can configure web/conf/facets.ini to turn on the new field and make it visible in search results.
