I'm kind of surprised such a tool doesn't already exist. ] It seems like part of the problem is that OAI-PMH harvesters are so easy to write. There are a ton of tools out there, and people are often inclined to just write their own. It's possible that there is something out there that exactly meets our needs, but we don't know about it because it's lost in the crowd! Does anybody have experience with OAI harvester tools? Recommendations from a veteran might be helpful. Also, when this conversation started on the VuFind list, I was leaning toward using a PHP tool for harvesting to keep the technology uniform... but now that we've moved out into this shared audience, perhaps Java is actually the better option. Any project that uses SolrMarc already has the necessary infrastructure for running Java applications, so that might be the most flexible platform for solving this problem in a shared fashion. At very least, there's this project in the Java domain: http://www.oclc.org/research/activities/past/orprojects//harvester2/harvester2.htm ...though at a glance, the documentation seems pretty sparse, and it hasn't been updated in about four years, so perhaps there's something else better out there. - Demian |
