We have 2 Intel Xeon X5450 CPUs, so 8 cores at 3 GHz, with 16 GB RAM. The Solr index (size about 80 GB) lives on a SAN drive. The server is running two Solr instances (one 1.2, one pre-1.4, 1.2 configured with 4 GB of Java heap, pre-1.4 with 8 GB of Java heap) and an Apache HTTP with VuFind and Wordpress... There is not much user load on that machine because we are not in production service yet. The Apache serves about 25000 requests per day (many of them coming from Googlebot), both Solr instances each about 5000 to 15000 per day. We had to switch to a 32 bit VMware virtual machine with 3 GB RAM some weeks ago because the hardware went up in smoke (both power supplies failed at the same time and smelled ugly :-). Main problem on that virtual machine was lack of RAM (Java could use only 2 GB heap space). I will collect some more data with Jmeter in a structured way and share it in the next days.
