For 300 entries, I would imagine your digital watch would do it :-)

We've got almost 6 million volumes and an index size of...looks like about 24GB.

We're running on a four-cpu machine with 8GB of RAM,  but a 32-bit Linux kernal so we can only allocate about 2.3GB to the java heap. Speed so far hasn't been an issue (our bottleneck is getting real-time holdings data out of our Aleph system).
