> Do you automatically restart Solr at any time?

Funny you should ask….when I went to look at what was going on, I realized I hadn’t logged onto our vufind server for ages! Now that our VuFind customizations are mostly finished and everything is running smoothly, I completely forget to check on that server at all.  Turns out there were all sorts of security updates and linux patches also all wanting attention.

Just goes to prove the old adage: If you think everything is going well, you have obviously overlooked something! J

Glad you got things fixed in a reasonable timeframe!

Do you automatically restart Solr at any time? If not, it might be worthwhile to prevent future instances like this. I know "just restart it periodically" isn't a very satisfying answer to a problem, but it does seem to help with Solr stability in my experience.

Works now, Tuan fixed it!

Still not sure what *originally* caused the problem overnight (don’t really care!),

but the reason why rebooting and restarting didn’t solve the problem is because I used sudo to start VuFind.

So I had 2 processes running—one owned by root, and another owned by our vufind user.

Thanks for the quick replies! This list is invaluable.

If you type:

ps -aux | grep java

Do you see a VuFind process running?

Sometimes if Solr goes really crazy, the process stays alive and prevents you from starting another one. You can try:

kill -9 (process ID from ps output)

You might need to use sudo, depending on your system's setup.

If that fails, rebooting the server might not hurt if that's an option.

Subject: [VuFind-General] Suddenly Solr offline

Hi,

I got into work this morning only to discover that VuFind reports: an error has occurred. Solr is offline.

I tried restarting vufind. Nothing. Output looks fairly normal.

I tried going to catalog.winnefox.org:8080/solr/  got a 404 error.

I looked at my reindex.log file and didn’t see any errors, but it also didn’t report a successful completion—not sure if it is supposed to, I’ve never looked before.

I found suggestions from archives to reindex.  Reindexing will take about an hour, so I was wondering if there were anything else quicker that I could try.

Sincerely,

Karla
