You can try the Eclipse IDE. It has a plugin called the 'Remote System Explorer' that you can back into the server via SSH, letting you look at the server through Eclipse as though it was a local filesystem.

This is a convenience answer, but the suggestions above regarding local working copies are more typical in a work environment since they impose fences between the environments that you have to be more conscious of when making changes.
