This is currently only used by the author recommendation module (a feature currently turned off in the "demo_trunk" version linked above), but it's certainly possible to create other forms that take advantage of this functionality. One of our subject librarians made the following suggestion which suggests much of the best practice is about educating people in the best VuFind practice rather than mimicking other systems: I think it would be useful to be able to browse alphabetically by author as we can do in Author search in Voyager. This can be helpful, for instance, if we don't know the precise form of the author's surname or we don't know whether the catalogue indexes the author with the full first name or simply the initial. In Voyager, for instance, I could do this search: [cid:image001.png@01CB184D.DBF02D10] and would immediately see listed any authors with the surname France and the initial J., including John France, and I can very quickly get a complete list of books by John France which doesn't also include books by any other author. Doing an Author search for France J in Vufind didn't, of course, bring up books by John France. It's certainly helpful that, if we remember that's possible to use a truncation symbol and search for France J* in Vufind this does bring up his books, though, and it's possible then to limit results to books by John France, since his name appears in the Author Results listing at the top of the page. (If James France were the author I was interested in, the Author Results listing wouldn't be so helpful, though!)
