I see the indexing example:

yet I'm unsure of what the consequences/benefits are of using this. Is 
there a paragraph somewhere that explains the index feature in more 
detail? Maybe it could be added to the 2.0 javadocs?

I read the thread on position caching.

Mark, the index feature has a short summary at
http://vtd-xml.sourceforge.net/persistence.html

It basically allows users to parse XML once and use
it for as often as they would like ... It also can be
viewed as a native XML index, or a binary XML
format back-compatible with XML itself...

There will be updates on the VTD-XML site that
explain this in more details... currently sourceforge
is down ...
