Aaron noted that the average line should be drawn "on top of" all the other (data) series to make it easier to see.
Modified observation plot pane code to specify a different rendering order so that means plot appears on top via the XYPlot.setSeriesRenderingOrder() method (see line 150 in AbstractObservationPlotPane). This works but only means datapoints not join lines and error bars appear to render last. Still looking for a way to bring these lines "to the front".
This raises another question for me. Given that a means series is derived from just a single band, why don't we only show the means series and the series from which it was derived. Or even just the means series. This would be by default of course. The user could make other bands visible via the usual series visibility dialog.
Reading the JFreeChart manual I recently purchased has not shed any new light on this problem. It may be a bug in JFreeChart.
The main thing is for the mean datapoints to be easily visible. This has been achieved (see last comment).
Reducing the priority of this problem. It still should be addressed, but probably not until after phase 1 now.
Nice but not essential at all.
