I am trying to get 2 office machines to connect via Tight VNC 1.2.9.
However, 2 things happen repeatedly:
1. No matter what I do the password changes back to a default 8
character password. I do not know what that password is. I am assuming
it's actually "password".
2. I cannot get the machines to connect. I continually get a message
stating "VNC authorization failed".
I have disabled firewalls and anti-virus software. What else can I look

While the passwords in the dialog box are always shown as eight '*'
characters, that does not mean there is some predefined password. There
is no one.
From the other side, standard VNC passwords are limited at 8 characters,
if you enter anything longer, it's truncated. Newer versions such as
1.3.8 warn about truncating passwords.

I'm not sure what is wrong in your case. Are you using TightVNC as an
application or as a system service?
