#1260 TightVNC Server 2.7.7 does not know which end is up when monitor rotated

Jim W.

Viewers of desktops with TightVNC Server 2.7.7 do not display the desktop with proper orientation when the monitor on the server is rotated into portrait mode. This includes the TightVNC 2.7.7 viewer, Java Viewer, and Remote Ripple Viewer for Android.

Remotely changing the desktop orientation is not a solution because it would rearrange the desktop's icons and provide the wrong orientation for those viewing the server's monitor. The only viewer that I have found that can display the rotated desktop is VNC Viewer Plus from realvnc.com because that viewer has a Rotate Clockwise button to rotate the desktop orientation.

It seem to me that the solution is to have the TightVNC Server recognize the desktop's orientation and present the desktop to the Viewers with the proper orientation, rather than change all the viewers. If there is a technical reason why this can not be done then provide the viewers with a Rotate Clockwise button to rotate the viewed desktop orientation.

What OS do you use? Is DFMirage Driver used?

Host OS Win 8 Pro x64 with standard drivers. Rotated desktop does not view remotely with correct orientation.

Put in that computer old, HD with Win XP Pro x32 and TightVNC 2.6.4 without DFMirage driver. Viewers see can see that desktop properly rotated. Upgraded TightVNC to 2.7.7 and again desktop viewed remotely with correct orientation.

Display adapters are 2 NVIDIA Quandro NVS 450.
    Win 8 shows as:
    Generic PnP Monitor (Analog connection)
    SyncMaster 2443 (Analog connection)
    SyncMaster 2443 (Analog connection)
    Win XP shows as:
    SyncMaster 243T
    SyncMaster 2433
    SyncMaster 2433

    Desktop: 3600x1920

It is known issue when it is used Win8 with more than one GPU with more than one monitor. Thanks for feedback.

Installed 2.7.10 and viewers now see desktop with correct portrait orientation. I made no hardware nor other software changes. My problem is fixed. Thanks.

NVIDIA Driver for Quadro NVS 450 has Date: 2/27/2013 Version: on viewer and 6/21/2013 on Win 8 TightVNC server. Maybe there was a server driver update done that I don't remember doing after reporting the problem. Did not test with TightVNC viewer after reporting problem until after 2.7.10.

I am experiencing the same problem running TightVNC Server 2.7.10 on Windows 8 even though both my displays are connected to the same Nvidia GeForce GTX680 (though presumably there is integrated Intel HD graphics on the motherboard).

I have two monitors: 1920x1200 (landscape, DVI-D, primary) and 1024x1280 (portrait, DVI-D, secondary). The TightVNC client correctly shows the second monitor as 1024x1280 (rather than 1280x1024) and correctly maps the cursor position. However the contents of the secondary display appear rotated counter-clockwise in the client making it impossible to know what I am actually clicking (unless I look at the physical secondary monitor of the server...).

It would be great if this could be fixed in a future release and am glad to provide any additional information.
