vmdos runs FreeDOS in virtual-8086 mode under a small 32-bit protected-mode kernel. It boots from GRUB (BIOS or UEFI) or as a UEFI application kernel. The kernel emulates the BIOS and PC hardware that DOS touches, so FreeDOS's kernel and FreeCOM run unmodified.

Drive C: is the FAT partition of the boot disk (SATA/AHCI, IDE, NVMe, virtio or USB), so changes and saved games persist. A RAM disk is available as fallback. Ready-made USB images are provided in the releases.

Features include:
• VGA text + graphics (mode 13h, Mode X, VBE) scaled to modern displays (sharp / smooth / xBRZ)
• Sound (PC Speaker, Sound Blaster, AC'97, HD Audio, USB Audio)
• Network (packet driver + IPX) on many Ethernet chips
• Mouse, keyboard, CD/ISO support
• Optional hardware virtualization (VMHV) for programs that need real mode ownership
• Bootable USB stick that becomes drive C:

A low-code dashboard makes monitoring intuitive for any admin, while scripting and custom sensors give experts full control.

You shouldn't have to choose between a monitoring tool that's easy to use and one that's powerful enough for a complex environment. PRTG's low-code interface lets any admin build dashboards, set alerts and monitor devices without scripting, while custom sensors and full API access are there when your team needs deeper control. One platform, no compromise. Download a free 30-day trial now.
