To declare in after years that it was the sweetest meat he ever ate.
Fired to adventure by the glowing accounts brought back by Uriah Stone,
a much more formidable band than any that had hitherto ventured
westward--including Uriah Stone as pilot, Gasper Mansker, John Rains,
Isaac Bledsoe, and a dozen others--assembled in June, 1769, in the New
River region. "Each Man carried two horses," says an early pioneer in
describing one of these parties, "traps, a large supply of powder and
led, and a small hand vise and bellows, files and screw plate for the
purpose of fixing the guns if any of them should get out of fix."
Passing through Cumberland Gap, they continued their long journey until
they reached Price's Meadow, in the present Wayne County, Kentucky,
where they established their encampment. In the course of their
explorations, during which they gave various names to prominent natural
features, they established their "station camp" on a creek in Sumner
County, Tennessee, whence originated the name of Station Camp Creek.
Isaac Bledsoe and Gasper Mansker, agreeing to travel from here in
opposite directions along a buffalo trace passing near the camp, each
succeeded in discovering the famous salt-lick which bears his
name--namely Bledsoe's Lick and Mansker's Lick. The flat surrounding the
lick, about one hundred acres in extent, discovered by Bledsoe,
according to his own statement "was principally Covered with buffelows
in every

T for the same on scientific and rational grounds. A little
understanding of fundamental occult and psychic principles, as given in
these lessons, will show the "why and wherefore" of these strange and
wonderful manifestations. In this connection you must remember that the
combined thought of the thousands of persons composing this cult or
organization undoubtedly gives additional psychic force to the mental
affirmations and denials of the individual member thereof. In past and
present, and probably in future time, there have been many instances of
magical procedures tending to bring about the results that we have
herein seen to come about by reason of psychic influence, in some of its
many phases. These magic procedures have usually been accompanied by
incantations, ceremonies, strange rites, evocations, etc., which were
supposed to have great virtue in bringing about desired results. But the
true occultists now know that these ceremonies and rites were merely
hopes to the imagination and aids to faith, and thus tended to bring
about the psychic phenomena. There was no virtue in these ceremonies
themselves, and the same results may be secured by simply following the
procedure outlined in this book. The wonders of ancient magic have been
reproduced by the modern occultists, without all the mumbo-jumbo of the
past rites and ceremonies. A gifted English writer upon the subject of
the relation of mysticism and magic, sums up the gist of the principles
of Magic as follows: "The central doctrine of Magic may now be summed up
thus: "(1) That a supersensible and real cosmic medium exists, which
interpenetrates, influences, and supports the tangible and apparent
world, and is amenable to the categories both of meta-physics and of
physics." [This of course is the astral plane, wh

 out of your cerebral vertebrae or your popliteal space? We have long
been derided and scoffed at for making connubialism marketable, and
putting a price on a wife's infidelity, but it strikes me this is
something worse; for what, after all, is a rib--a false rib,
too--compared with the whole bony skeleton? "Allah is Allah," said the
Turkish admiral to Lady Hester Stanhope, "but I have got two anchors
astern," showing that, with all his fatalism, he did not despise what
are technically called human means. So the reverend Archdeacon, going
down for his sea-baths, might say, "I'm not quite sure they'll carry me
safely, but it shall not be all misfortune--I'll take out some of it in
money." The system, however, has its difficulties; for though it is a
round game, the stakes are apportioned with reference to the rank and
condition of the winner--as, for instance, the Solicitor-General's
collarbone is worth a shoemaker's whole body, and a Judge's patella is
of more value than a dealer in marine stores and his rising family. This
is a tremendous pull against the company, who not only give long, but
actually incalculable odds; for while Mr Briggs of the second class can 

 had heard what we had to say, and the argument advanced by each on his
own behalf, he delivered judgment in the following terms: "You are both
of you in the wrong," said he. "Peter should not have refused to obey an
order without referring the matter to me, and you Van Luck ought not to
have taken the law into your own hands when I, your captain, am the
proper judge upon such matters. Still I am willing to overlook your
dereliction of duty (though by every rule of the sea you are both
deserving of death at the yard arm) provided that at the first suitable
place, and time, you fight out your quarrel as man to man, and pass me
your words that, whatever the result, the survivor, or victor, shall
bear the other no ill will." This was a favourite method of Hartog's for
settling disputes that were occasionally bound to arise among his crew
upon so long a voyage. Order upon the ship, he maintained, must, for the

them to find not one foot-print on heather or grass. The witnesses
attested the whole story on oath before a magistrate; and fearful were
the expectations held by the whole country-side about the coming events
of the Scotch rebellion. "It now comes out that two other persons had
seen something of the sort in the interval--_viz._, in 1743--but had
concealed it, to escape the insults to which their neighbours were
subjected. Mr. Wren, of Wilton Hall, and his farm servant, saw, one
summer evening, a man and a dog on the mountain, pursuing some horses
along a place so steep that a horse could hardly by any possibility keep
a footing on it. Their speed was prodigious, and their disappearance at
the south end of the fell so rapid, that Mr. Wren and the servant went
up, the next morning, to find the body of the man who must have been
killed. Of man, horse, or dog, they found not a trace and they came down
and held their tongues. When they did speak, they fared not much better
for having twenty-six sworn comrades in their disgrace. "As for the
explanation, the editor of the _Lonsdale Magazine_ declared (vol. ii.,
p. 313) that it was discovered that on the Midsummer Eve of 1745 the
rebels were 'exercising on the western coast of Scotland, whose
movements had been reflected by some transparent vapour, similar to the
Fata Morgana.' This is not much in the way of explanation; but it is, as
far as we know, all that can be had at present. These facts, however,
brought out a good many more; as the spectral march of the
