The intent (not necessarily successful) was that the instructions in
INSTALL.txt would be useful to anyone building from source on any
version of Linux, with Ubuntu taken as an example. Obviously it's not
possible to document all the tricks that might be necessary on all of
the world's many versions of Linux.
