I have no idea how/why your two different Python 2.5's behave
differently. I do notice that the Sage download, which bundles together
a large number of packages, includes numeric rather than numpy, but you
seem to have numpy installed. And in any case the error message
concerning Unicode. Sorry! I hope someone else has a clue.
There is indeed a known bug in the autoconf machinery for creating the
vpython convenience script. On the download page at vpython.org there is
a suggestion to use a script like this (which you presumably figured out
for yourself):
cd /usr/local/lib/python2.5/site-packages/visual/examples
/usr/local/bin/python2.5 /usr/local/lib/python2.5/idlelib/idle.pyw
