Yes, the Visual module uses OpenGL.
My unexpert guess is that Visual isn't "extensible" to SDL, whatever that
would mean. Visual implements a parallel thread that periodically reads the
current values of the attributes of the graphics objects that have been
created, and it paints a 3D scene using these current values. This makes 3D
graphics be a side effect of computations. Architecturally, this is pretty
different from other kinds of graphics environments.
