gtkglarea is not supplied by the libgtkgl5 package but by the the packages gtkglarea5 and gtkglarea5-dev. Installation under debian woody is pretty simple: see the detailed instructions I gave in an email to this list some months back. I've then installed to other debian woody machines by simply copying by cvisualmodule.so and the files in the visual directory from one machine to the next, after installing apt-getting gtkglarea5. Then it's not even necessary to apt-get all the various '-dev' packages.
