This is one of the things that is on my to-do list as part of my masters
project. My initial intention is to just use the sphere object as the
mapping shape, but other geometries may be utilised as well. Due date: Maybe
the middle of 2003 (when the project is due), but as this is a low priority
requirment it may not happen at all :(

Surface textures (of which this is one example) are on the "wanted" list,
but no one is currently working on this.
