For my purposes, therefore, it's necessary to have the current funcitonality (i.e., to always have labels appear on top of the scene). As for which behavior is more appropriate generally, I won't guess. I might suggest, however, that the label object have options with default behavior (which default wouldn't matter to me). Just my $0.02.
