There are two different issues. If you see a display with incorrect colors, that usually means that it is necessary to update the graphics driver. If you have trouble in a 64-bit environment but not in a 32-bit environment, that indicates a problem with building the application for 64-bit environments. If you installed the standard python-visual package that comes with Ubuntu, that could mean that the package was not built correctly for 64-bit Ubuntu. If you built from source, there are in the mailing list archives notes by people who have successfully built for 64-bit Ubuntu.
