A pan mode would indeed be useful, and as you saw in an obsolete "4beta" page it briefly existed. At about that time there was a big upheaval in VPython development, and in the process of major progress it wasn't possible to keep the beta-level pan mechanism. It is certainly something worth implementing in the future. I draw your attention to an entry in the "contributed programs" section of vpython.org: Zoom and spin under complete program control (Bruce Sherwood) You could probably enhance this with not much effort to offer a pan mode. If your graphics card doesn't have an acceleration mode, I don't see how you can make the hardware go faster.
