You certainly don't have to use VIDLE if you don't wish to. As for installing Visual for some Python other than the one for which it has been built, no, I don't see any way around building Visual yourself from source. Of course if your "existing Python installation" happens to be the standard Python for the Mac recommended by python.org, you're all set; just use the Visual installer for the Mac. By the way, you might be interested to know that Visual was created at Carnegie Mellon in 2000 by David Scherer, then a sophomore in computer science.
