I'm not competent to comment on the other issues you raise, but the
answer to the question below is no, you can run VPython on MacOSX by
installing the binaries available on the Mac download page at
vpython.org. Or you can use the packages available in fink. It is not
necessary to build from source to be able to use VPython on the Mac.
