I believe I am a victim of this bug on Ubuntu 9.10<https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mesa/+bug/474928>, which is indeed related to the dreaded Radeon Mobility 7500 graphics adapter. Dreaded because this thing has way more than its share of problems, and ATI has set it adrift... no more driver updates...
