Hi. Did not notice this until now but seems like the web page has gone away for some reason. Currently on bussiness trip so need to check this next week when home again.
Any update on this? The modules seem not available anymore.
Here's a similar thread https://sourceforge.net/p/virtuawin/discussion/257054/thread/8075fec747/ . Some people there reported that they were able to fix this by using "Hide by moving window" (works for me). Also, here's ( https://aka.ms/AArflbo ) a Microsoft Feedback Hub Problem report I just posted - consider upvoting it - sometimes they do listen and fix things (maybe 1% chance or so...).
I'm using VirtuaWin 4.5 on Windows 10 (22H2, 19045.4529). The Metro-style application windows (e.g. Feedback Hub, Settings, Microsoft Store, Calculator, ...) are not getting hidden from my taskbar when I switch to another virtual desktop with my VirtuaWin 4.5. The window itself is getting hidden OK, though. This seem to be a bug in the Metro-style windows framework, because all the other windows (e.g. Notepad) do get their taskbar buttons hidden OK. Although I found "Modern" (Metro) apps in background...

I ended up switching to just having Windows 11 do this natively. It's really very equivalent functionality to VirtuaWin, only that when you call up an application in another desktop it yanks you to that desktop, instead of puling it around intelligently. But that's a tradeoff I had to make with VirtuaWin broken on Windows.

I have a simple setup on Windows 7. It has worked for several years. I only have 2 desktops. I switch using the middle mouse button on the VirtuaWin icon in the Notification Bar in the lower right corner. If I click the icon on desktop 1 it switches to desktop 2. Up until last week, If I clicked the icon on desktop 2, it would switch to desktop 1. I can still switch from #1 to #2 but I can no longer switch back to #1 with the middle mouse button. I have not intentionally made any system changes in...
Hi Darek M, Just noticed that if the Excel window is set to Always Show, the ribbon etc does not disappear. Cheers
Hi Darek M, I can confirm the behaviour in Excel 2019 (Office Pro Plus). Like you I did not see it in the other Office apps I tried. I also noted : 1. Excel menu hot keys are no longer active when the ribbon etc disappears. 2. Switching to the File screen (ALT-F) in Excel before switching to the next view in Virtua Win stops the ribbon etc disappearing. Hope this helps
Curious if anyone has seen this issue, or can replicate it. I'm using Office Pro Plus 2016. It only affects Excel apparently, not Access, PowerPoint or Word. When I first open Excel, I get the full window as you can see at the top of the screen shot. I switch to another desktop, then switch right back, and see what you see in the bottom half of the screenshot. It's a bit annoying as all the features are unusable, and I have to reopen the app. Resizing it doesn't do anything, neither does double clicking...
By the way, today windows are appearing on separate desktops! Yesterday I tried stopping and restarting VirtuaWin with no effect. I didn't think of restarting Win 11. That must have reset whatever incompatibility was haunting my machine yesterday. Cheers!
It's good to know you're still around! I've relied on VirtuaWin to keep my sanity while working in the Microsoft arena. I'm sorry to hear that you're not keeping up with Win 11. I was forced into it when my old laptop died, and that's the only OS that HP installs on their machines now. By the way, when I asked Google Bard for a multi-desktop layer on top of Win 11, It recommended several (paid) solutions. I asked why it didn't recommend VirtuaWin. It apologized and said that it existed, but development...

Hi Steve and thanks for the reports. Problem here is that Win11 have never been tested by anyone before as far as I know, and I do not have access to any win11 setup myself so makes this really impossible to support. Clearly MS have made some changes that makes VirtuaWin incompatible then, and I honeslty thought that they would have made a worthy replacement for VirtuaWin by now, since it is over 25 years since I started to code on this thing.

Hi. Not sure why taks manager window refuse to hide actually. All data looks fine so is should really be working fine as any other normal window. Tried to configure a window rule now also but no luck :(
run virtualwin, switch from desktop 1 to desktop 2,run windows task manager, switch back to desktop 1 and task manager window is on desktop 1 as well.any configuration that could when I run some GUI app and the app windows will only remain on that desktop I run them other than move to other desktop.

Hello, no problem. I finally made time to look into the help section but I'm not sure if window rules can do what I'm looking for. I see that it can control what programs display in each VM, but can it control what position a program should be occupy in the desktop? For example, I want program A set in the left side of the screen and program B in the right side of the screen, and if they ever get mixed up I want a hotkey to put them back into position. I don't see any options for his kind of thing...
Sorry, was replying on my Linux box so could not check and then I forgot. But "windows rules" is the concept we use for assigning application windows to a certain desktop. Check the help on that topic and I think you can figure it out, even though it might seem a bit complex at first. /Johan
Hi Johan can you please explain how to make VirtuaWin persist my window layout? Thank you for your time.
Actually that's how I use my setup right now, sorry for not clarifying. Both monitors switch from VM1 to VM2 and back at the same time. But can you please explain how to make VirtuaWin persist my window layout? I was very confused how to operate it at all. For simplicity's sake we can just deal with one VM right now. (And thank you for taking the time to respond so far!)

Ok, so I guess you would run an instance of VirtuaWin per VM then. And VirtuaWin should be able to persist your window layout, but I must admit that I'm really unsure how all this would play along in your rather special setup. On top of that, VirtuaWin is really not that great at handling multiple monitors in a good way I would say. Basically is will shift desktop on both your monitors at the same time, not as I have on my Linux box where the virtual desktop only handles the primary display.
Yes sir. Right now I'm using the Virtual Desktop function that's native to Windows 10, but with VirtuaWin I'd want to use two virtual machines. Each VM would use my two screens in the way most people use two screens, as an extended desktop (as opposed to duplicated, or different VM's per screen). Each VM has a different list of programs open, and in different layouts/positions on the two screens. For example VM1 is my work environment: on screen 1 I have two Chrome windows open and on screen 2 there...
Hi Donny. What do you mean by two VMs here? Virtual Machines?
I have two screens and I use two VM's (one for work and one for everyday stuff). In each VM I have several different windows positioned to do different things. Sometimes when one screen turns off, all the windows get jumbled up and repositioned somewhere else. I want to save where certain windows are positioned on each screen, in each VM. And when these windows are ever moved, I want a hotkey to reposition them to their saved positions. Ideally all windows at once, but I can live with one window...
Hi. Now I'm not sure which hotkey that is but could be Alt-Win-"left arrow". Soem other application probably have this assigned then, but open the hotkey config and try to remove or reconfigure the fith one in the list and see if that helps.
Hello. I have tried to install VirtualWin, but only got "VirtualWin Error: Failed to register hotkey 5, check hotkeys". Do you know how to fix this? Thank you.

I've been having this same issue with Ghost Windows, I think I got the "automatically close windows of this type" option working - you have to also select "Never manage windows of this type". Hello and thanks a lot for such an awesome app. I have Windows 10 Pro, with VirtuaWin running with only two desktops (a very large screen helps). After the last Microsoft Windows 10 update, when the computer came back from the reboot, I noticed that whenever I switch between desktops, the Powershell windows gets minimized, but most likely it is Windows Terminal that is getting minimized: I have it set to run pwsh by default. I noticed that Windows CMD doesn't suffer the problem: I can start CMD and...
I added ApplicationFrameWindow and selected "Automatically close windows of this type” I performed a “Reapply Rules” – still encountering ghost windows. “Exit Virtuawin”, open VirtuaWin. “Reapply Rules” - still encountering ghost windows. Reboot. - still encountering ghost windows. I followed these steps on both my laptop and my desktop with the same result. Even with the ghost window issue, I absolutely love this program. Thank you to all who wrote and support it!! Paul

Hi Payl. I'm quite sure he refers to adding a rule in VirtuaWin, basically asking VirtuaWin to close these windows if they should be detected. /Johan
Hi JayB, I have the same issue you describe. Could you expand on how to add a windows rule? I am not sure if you are referring to a setting in VirtuaWin or a Windows 10 setting. Either way it would be very helpful to have the steps. Thank you, Paul
Thanks for looking at it. The problem has resolved itself. I suspect the cause and the fix are related to Windows updates. Gotta love those updates!! Hi. Just wanna let you know that will be very hard for me to investigate this since I'm still on Win 10. So hopefully someone else with some programming skills could try and support here. /Johan
Hey. This sounds strange, and there is not stuff in the registry so must be something else. Maybe you can attach your config here and I can start with it to see how it behaves in my system? Regards /Johan
Hello- i have been using VW for years, now using v4.5. here is my problem, which started a month or so ago. Under window rules, I have a program set to open to desktop 4. It does open on desktop 4, but instead of the desktop going back to #1, it goes to #3. probably a year ago, i had it set to open in #3. All other programs (10 total) when opened in various windows all go back to desktop #1. the setting are the same for each program I have set up under windows rules (except for which desktop the...

Hi there, Yes, I had done that but they keep closing it when they're at the PC When started, that program cannot be minimized unfortunately and will stay on top until either closed or entered with a login. I tried some keyboard macro, but that had it's own issues. I really hope I can force that program to launch into a hidden screen that is tucked away. Thanks!
Wow, baffled! Community center far from Accra, in the hinterlands along the Black Volta. Wish they could get SpaceX internet there..... My biggest problem are the youth, they constantly hack and crack. And stuff gets stolen. The center cannot pay the police, so there is nothing we can do. Thankfully in a way the old PC is meanwhile too old even for those kids.

Well, actually I have, Accra 2017 doing some hardware upgrades ;-)
I'm sure you haven't been to Ghana. Resources are scarce, internet is expensive, 20% still don't have simple access to clean water. Yes, I will try out your program, hope it works!' Freaky hotkeys sounds great. Thank you!
Sorry to hear about your situation, been in the IT business for over 22 years and never heard of such thing. Well, you cannot lock a screen but guess you can setup some freaky hotkeys to switch screen to make it very unlikely that they figure out how to switch. Still not sure this is the right tool, but can't you test a bit on your own PC to get a feel if it could work? PS. Not aware of any other "hiding tools", but haven't looked for it either. Thank for your reply. I tried many times, big notes and passwords and whatnot, it simply doesn't work. Notes are ignored, password is taped to the monitor, and they tap into that PC. The users are totally computer illiterate, they don't even know how to minimize. They often start typing their email or URL into a field of that program, the more knowledged just close that program. So yes, the goal is to hide that program window away, from being visible/accessible to them. Is there a way to password...
Hi Sue and same to you! It does not sound like a perfect fit to me. I guess if your issue is that they see an app window and close it, then running virtuawin here and hide the window by moving to another desk could help, as long as they do not figure that out of course. But feels easier to try and talk to the persons messing with you IMHO. Regards /Johan
Hi there, Happy(er) and Healthy(er) New Year all! I need to run a special program 24h on an older PC (W7). the PC is in a very remote location and is sometimes used by other people (it's the only PC there). They sometimes close that program or worse, mess with it. So I was thinking to use a virtual screen and lock it in with that special program, so nobody there can access it. Would this be possible with your nice program? I would need to control/check that PC once in a while with VNC (UltraVnc),...

Ok, back on Windows. Window rules for mail app - check automatically move to desk 1. - check Move windows immediately. - Then select on hidden window activation, chose ignore the event (or change globally for all according to your preference). Don't forget to click modify to apply your rule. Now mail app will always start on Desk 1 no matter what desktop you are on when starting it.
You mean you want it to auto move to desk 1 even if opened on desk 2? Think that would be possible, cannot test right now however since on Linux work computer.
My intent is to have Mail app only on Desktop 1. When context is in Desktop 2, and Mail app is started, it stays in Desktop 2. I would have thought that it would be moved to Desktop 2. However, when I hit 'reapply rules', it is moved to Desktop 1. This is very helpful. Here are the logs I am getting. Yea, middle button does not work on some windows, for example like these frameless ones that this app is constructed of. But strange then, no idea what could differ then. You can always paste a screenshot of your rules here so we can compare but really did not change any default so beats me. What you can do to just make sure your naming is the same, enable window logging (from settings), restart VW, then tail the logfile and open mail app and see what VW writes. In my case it was the two strings...
Thanks Johan, Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to work for me. Very odd. The middle mouse button to get the window rule information doesn't work with the Mail app. Any suggestions on how to proceed?
Hi. I set it up now successfully with Class name: ApplicationFrameWindow Window name: Mail All other settings default.
Hi folks, setting up virtuawin and trying to get the windows rules working. Any guidance on how to setup a window rule (ie identifying) the windows 10 mail app? https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/mail-and-calendar/9wzdncrfhvqm?activetab=pivot:overviewtab
And it does basically work very well, and personally I think it's a lot better than the built in Windows desktop manager. Just this one little quirk ...
Yea, I would say unix based system have have very good "native support" from very long time back. What we as independent developers can do on Windows is basically just a hack, and try to make that hack as good as we can :(
I have tried the built in Windows desktop manager, Dexpot and VirtuaWin which all work in much the same way. An old Sun workstation I used in the 90s however had all the desktops independent of each other!
I have tried and it is possible to get e.g. Excel to open a new instance every time a file is opened from say Explorer by specifying “excel.exe /x”. However it would be nice to have just one excel instance on each desktop. That way the desktops are completely independent of each other. My real problem is I have one desktop with a massive very slow spreadsheet. I don’t want the other desktops to load into that Excel instance. On the other hand I don’t want to have a new excel instance for every spreadsheet...
Some applications control themselves whether new files will be opened in another tab, or whether a new instance of the application is required. My text editor is like that, so if (not in virtuawin but in general) a script issues a command like texteditor.exe "C:\this\that\other\somefile.txt" then a new instance of texteditor.exe (though it's not actually named that) always starts. However if the user has configured it to use existing instances of itself, I think it checks if one is already running...
Hi Robert. I would say that is impossible to control since VirtuaWin is not at all involved in this process of opening files. Or have you seen any other virtual desktop application managing this? Regards /Johan
If I open a new spreadsheet in Excel (or photo, pdf etc in some other application) in Desktop 2 and an Excel instance is already running in Desktop 1, then VirtuaWin loads the spreadsheet (or whatever) into the instance already active in Desktop 1. How can I force it to open a new instance of Excel in Desktop 2 (unless an instance is already running in Desktop 2)? A FWIW a new Excel instance is possible via the command line "excel.exe /x" but this needs to be built into VirtuaWin. It seems to me...
