I'm really *really* interested in a distibution which boots from a compact flash card (using an ide adaptor), and stores only essential permanent data on the compactflash (compact flash cards shouldn't be written and erased too many times as they have a limited lifespan). This is effectively a hard disk, but with writing/erasing/re-writing kept to a minimum.
I would imagine swap possibly being a ramdisk, and user storage areas (I would like user management, email, and fileserving, possibly pdc controller, and certainly backup/restore to/from NAS) from a hard drive (possibly with the option of software raid).
Is virtual linux a possibility?
I don't have the skills to build my own, but have a real desire to see if this kind of server would be practicable.
