On W2K SP4, attempting to run XML Spy 2007 causes the machine to hang. The machine cannot be rebooted and power must be cycled in order to restart the operating system.
Try disabling shell integration, in the preferences panel. You can also disable it selectively for the application, through the adavanced tab.
This should solve the problem.

Tried the suggestion of disabling shell integration and it did not resolve the problem. Have noticed that the problem only occurs if the Virtual Dimension window is being displayed on the desktop. If I click once on the icon in the Notification Area causing the Virtual Dimension window to be hidden and start XML Spy, it starts without a hitch. I can then click the VD icon again to restore the window and keep working.
