We need gnome-terminal to work a bit better with Orca, and preferably speakup and gnome-terminal would work in a very similar way. Two e-mails on the topic:

Hi,
I know this is just wishful thinking, but it would be even better if we could get gnome-terminal to use speakup. It seems like it should be possible using the same ideas behind espeakup. That is, make an app that passes info from gnome-terminal to speakup.
I tried myself to fix a bug in Orca that causes the first character on a line of text to be omitted. I never got very far though.

I've not really given gnome-terminal much thought. I think the GNOME VTE library accessibility support (http://library.gnome.org/devel/vte/unstable/VteTerminalAccessible.html) might need some tender loving care to make it a better a11y citizen before more effective Orca scripting can be done for it.
