We should definitely have some sensible defaults, or even consider not changing them at all so things look comfortable for people moving over from Vimperator (or even earlier versions of vimprobable, people usually don't like change). As you said, ultimately what is best is very subjective and nearly every one of us will probably have our own preference, so I think that what we choose as defaults is less important than having the ability to easily change them.
