I've already noticed this.  They have been included in Ken's original
work and they're normally at the beginning of some lines.  I think they
are not the diff stuff but sort of particular things used for coloring. 
It may be somewhat weird but if you removed them the words between that
'>' and '<' wouldn't be color-syntaxed any more.
